I received the postal service’s post card for their yearly food collection and noticed that they emphasized that HEALTHY nonperishable foods are wanted for the Saturday, May 13th, 2017 food collection. “Donations stay in your community” according to the information on the post card.
If you didn’t know, an overabundance of the nonperishable foods donated to food pantries for charitable tax deductions by grocery stores are highly processed and full of simple carbohydrates (high glucose/sugar) which readily convert to fat.
That’s a reason why so many people who go to food pantries, ironically, are obese. That’s also a reason why so many Americans in general are obese–foods that are full of simple carbohydrates are fast and easy to prepare. Many can be eaten straight from the bag or box that they come in. Since they are metabolized quickly, they don’t stay in the stomach that long which leads to needing to eat greater amounts to feel sated.
More healthy, nutritious choices are available at food pantries when gardeners and farmers donate fruits and vegetables, however, such produce has a limited shelf life compared to processed foods that laden with preservatives.
The time is now: In a previous post, Grow Your Own Food, I suggested that you befriend a gardener because gardeners tend to have extra produce that they can not eat before it goes bad.
Too many tomatoes? If you’re a gardener, and have food extra food that you don’t know what to do with, contact a food pantry to find out if they’d be interested.
If you can, remember to fill a bag for the USPS food collection this Saturday and place it by your mailbox for a mail carrier to pick up. It’s neat to see how many homes the mail carrier stops at to pick up food before they do their normal delivery route. It looks like a lot of work when several residents in one are participate!
