First of all, warmest gratitude goes out to my new Stephenson County Spotlight followers. Also, my thanks go out to the members of the group I created earlier this month, Freeport Singles Practical Support Net which can be found on Facebook.
Something that singles and couples alike have interest in is saving money. Food and housing tend to be the biggest recurring expenses.
The food in the photo above came from a friend’s garden, my own, The Salavation Army, and a farmer’s market.
I want to give you search terms that will help you discover many ways that you can save money, time, and energy by empowering you to be more self-sufficient. One way you can do that is by growing some of your own food.
If you’re a renter, ask your landlord if you can have a garden. Look up “lasagna gardening” which is a type of garden plot that doesn’t require digging or tilling.
Container gardens are another option for those who don’t want to dig. If space is limited, find out which types of plants bear prolific fruit, straight-neck yellow squash, for example.
Need groceries? Walk outside. The greens seen in the photo above were picked from my lawn. I learned about several edible weeds, including plantain, dandelion, and purslane one year that I didn’t have a garden. Look up “foraging” to get ideas of other overlooked edible plants that could be right in your yard. Be careful to avoid greens that are in high traffic areas that animals and people might have contaminated. Rinse them well and cook soon after harvesting.
If you have friends or relatives who will let you use part of their yard for a garden, offer to give them some of the food, or plant something that they will enjoy in exchange for use of their property and possibly water if there hasn’t been enough rainfall. We’ve gotten plenty this year.
Gardening requires planning; it’s a great idea to start getting in mind what you’d like to eat in advance. Make a list of what you like and do research. Find out what grows well in this zone. It’s very important to cater to individual plants’ needs to grow them successfully, follow instructions with care.
Once you’ve successfully grown something, you’ll understand why gardening is one of the favorite pastimes of many people. It’s exciting to look forward to growing and harvesting exactly what you wanted.
